Kaveh Golestan

The BBC cameraman and Pulitzer prize-winning photographer Kaveh Golestan has died while covering the war in Iraq after stepping on a mine. Golestan, an Iranian national who had worked for the BBC in a freelance capacity for the past three years, was killed instantly when he stepped out of his car onto a mine.

"Kaveh Golestan was an outstanding photojournalist who had worked in support of freedom of expression in his native Iran and elsewhere and was well known to many western news organisations," said Richard Sambrook, the director of BBC News. "He had worked with the BBC for many years. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends. This once again underlines the dangers faced by news teams covering the war in Iraq."

The incident occurred at lunchtime today in Kifri, a town in the southern part of the Kurdish area of Iraq. Golestan was well known and acclaimed for his photography during the Iranian revolution and of the gassing of the Kurds during the Iran-Iraq War in 1988.
